What’s the problem?
In the world of continuing education there is no right path for everyone. There are many paths to take, taking a gap year, going straight to college, trade school, changing majors, adding minors the list is endless. So why do we still have the expectation that you have to go to college right out of highschool spend 4 years studying and be done?
There is so much more we learn from college aside from what we study in class. We go through a tremendous amount of self growth and have various experiences throughout those years that makes our higher education journey even more important.

How can I use my personal college experience combined with film and motion to help incoming freshmen feel more comfortable?
Using the research that I have collected this year I intend to make a short film utilizing my design skills and passion for film that explores what life experiences we take away form our search for higher education.

I started with research. I spoke with classmates directly to create a personal connection since I wanted my film to have a more personal aspect. During each interview I asked the same series of questions and let my classmates tell their story.

After this I gathered all my notes from my interviews and compiled them in to lists of things that various students talked about. This helped me find common themes between the students, including my self, that I could then combine in to a outline for my script.

Filming was both fun and the worst thing all at the same time. I was having a lot of fun getting to learn my camera and play around with shot composition. It was empowering getting to bring my idea to life. I had complete creative freedom and it was amazing.
Why was learning about film valuable?
Even though I knew I probably wouldn’t be a part of the filming process as a motion designer I really wanted to be able to better conceptualize the process from start to finish. It has helped me become a better designer tremendously. The most valuable thing I learned was how to design my motion graphic around the needs of the footage I would be utilizing to have a stronger sense of cohesion in my designs.
